Are you drinking quality water for beauty’s sake?
One of the most common beauty tips you’ve come across must be to drink eight glasses of water each day. While some experts have established that we don’t need to drink that much water to have healthy, glowing skin, the fact remains that we need to drink enough water to prevent cell dehydration that can contribute to skin wrinkling. Personally, I know that my skin becomes dry when I don’t drink sufficient water but I also know my skin doesn’t look any better when I drink lots of water. So my call is to drink a balanced amount according to what you need, and more importantly, to drink quality water for the sake of our wellness and beauty. But what exactly is quality water? Is the water you are consuming considered a quality water supply?
If you’re consuming mostly boiled tap water
For most of us, tap water is our first source of supply. Although I’ve drunk filtered water for some years, the water I’ve been drinking for most part of my life is actually boiled tap water. Although it is said that the water quality in Singapore is well within the guidelines set by WHO, is it really clean? Clean just means “the absence of pathogenic (illness causing) microorganisms or harmful levels of poisonous chemicals or radiation but our tap water still contains chlorine, fluoride, traces of heavy metals, and contaminants especially since our water supply still has to pass through public pipes to reach our homes. Personally, I think our tap water is safe to drink but it is not the best quality water.
If you’re consuming mostly distilled water
I had thought all along that bottled water is cleaner than tap water. Well, that is true but what I didn’t know was that bottled water, especially those that are distilled or purified via reverse osmosis, offers no benefits to the body because such purification filter strips the water of important trace minerals such as calcium and magnesium and potassium. Nutritionists have said that reverse osmosis and distilled water leach minerals from bones and so long-term consumption of such de-mineralized water tends to depletes calcium and other minerals from our bones and body – what medical specialist terms as “ash out our body”. I can’t say for certain if this is indeed true because there have been differing theories on the topic but what I do know is that de-mineralized water has a lower pH and is therefore slightly more acidic (source) and this can cause the production of more free radicals in our bodies in the long run and we know that isn’t a good thing at all.
If you’re consuming mostly mineral water
Mineral water is water that has had minerals dissolved into it as a result of being stored underground. Spring water is mineral water for example. However, in today’s context, mineral water are all bottled and hence, we don’t really know the real source and if the minerals are indeed safe or edible, do we? Plus, I don’t know if you’ve heard of this but I was always told not to drink too much mineral water because it can result in the development of kidney stones although I’ve read that mineral water containing calcium and magnesium is a possible therapeutic or prophylactic agent in calcium oxalate kidney stone disease (source). Personally, I do drink mineral water but moderately. In addition, a bottle of mineral water isn’t exactly cheap and so even if mineral water is very beneficial, the cost of drinking them just doesn’t add up in the long run. Not to mention that plastic bottles aren’t environmentally friendly at all.
What is quality water?
So what constitutes quality water that is beneficial to our bodies? First, it should be non-carbonated, clean and uncontaminated – without chlorine, bacteria, or heavy metals. Next, it should be pH neutral with good ionic mineral & trace mineral balance, has active hydrogen properties that will help neutralize free radicals in your body. The water should also be of smaller water molecule cluster size as that will enable easily absorption, thereby helping to keep your body properly hydrated. Finally, it should also be soft and refreshing to your taste buds. Such quality water will be able permeate into your cell membrances to carry nutrients and oxygen in, flush waste and toxins out, thereby helping to promote pH balance in your body.
How can drinking quality water help your beauty & wellness?
By neutralizing free radicals that cause premature ageing, drinking quality water provides many health benefits. Overtime, one can feel more energy and vigor with increased blood circulation and enhance body metabolism too. And because quality water is able to actively transport minerals in ionic form to organs in our body, this will help to replenish and rejuvenate cells in our organs to function better. In addition, the smaller water clusters provide better oxygenation and increase permeability to effectively penetrate cell and tissue membrane to provide better hydration as well as flush out toxic wastes from our bodies. This antioxidant and detox abilities mean that our skin will become better hydrated, clearer and healthier!
Cell-Gen AH Water is also certified free from heavy metals and radiation – such certifications are not seen available in other filtration companies currently – and the products are backed by over 9 years of extensive research and clinical studies by a team of more than 22 doctors and specialists from renowned Japanese universities. Cell-Gen Activated Hydrogen Water uses minerals which have been certified by Japan Food Research Centre and Japan Ministry of Health to be safe for consumption as food.

OMG. there is a spa water filter!
Anyway, I agree that even though tap water in Singapore is clean enough for drinking, it is not healthy. There was a time I stopped drinking tap water and took only mineral water and purified water alternately and I felt the improvement in my energy levels, my throat and general hydration (skin and feeling).

I understand that they have installed their system at a spa in Jurong and it’s apparently good for those with skin issues like eczema. I think drink good quality water is important…I’ll write about my experience in a bit but I can see some purging due to detox currently.
I didn’t know distilled water is not too good. I drink quite a lot of them daily. ?
I knew it was your post ? I instead avoid drinking from the bottled water and the only other option is purified underground water for me here!!! I mean our water is pumped through the water table but I guess that would be equally unclean, right??? so many things are disposed of into the water now a days!!!

You should stop drinking so much then. Anyway, do a research into the water bottles used for such distilled water and you maybe appalled the info.
If you can get your hands on a decent filter water system, it’s actually better. Plus the cost adds up in the long run both money and health.
This is a little late but your post got me curious about drinking water so I did a little research. Did you also consider alkaline water while shopping for quality water? I have a friend who started drinking alkaline water and I can see that her skin has gone from dry to hydrated. I’m considering installing but a little torn between the 2.
I did…but from what I understand is, activated hydrogen water is a better choice cos too much alkaline water may contribute to imbalance to the body. Maybe you want to read up about being over alkaline.
what about the diamond water filter? my whole family has been drinking it for years.
I like to reserve my comments on that but if you want to know more, you can search the Internet.

The place where I reside, the water is not fit for drinking and I have been using water purifier for many years. Clean and safe water do help with skin care. Good article. Cheers!
Let me appreciate you for this wonderful website. It is just awesome.
Thanks, Sesame for the informative article. I used to drink water from a RO water filtering system. It’s water taste great and has remineralizing capability which is a nice addition.

I rarely drink bottled water. We have water from the fridge that is filtered, so I just fill up re-usable bottles with that!
This is some really good information about water. I liked that you pointed out that it would be smart to try to drink filtered water. It might be smart to get the pH levels of your water every now and then.
