Hello from Malaysia: Paul Penders halal products

Paul Penders range of natural skin care products are not new to me but I had absolutely no idea that this Dutch brand is actually based in the Langkawi island in Malaysia! Interestingly, this brand has been around for over 40 years in Holland but it was only in 2003 that founder, Paul Penders, discovered the rainforests of Langkawai in the Andaman Sea and decided to relocate his R&D facilities to Langkawi Geopark. So this is the place where Paul Penders’ formulations are created and that’s like so close to us here in Singapore! Yet, this brand has rather limited presence here as far as I am aware; at least I don’t see the products sold in popular outlets.

Products are vegan & are certified halal
That’s quite a pity really because Paul Penders offers a wide range of products from skin care, hair care, body care and cosmetics for adults to products for babies. Paul Penders products are made with certified organic ingredients and they are not only 100% vegan but also certified halal as licensed by the Government of Malaysia. For those who don’t know, this concerns a worldwide internationally accredited certification process that assures that the said products do not contain animal ingredients, or animal by-products which includes slaughterhouse products as well. This is the first time I’ve come across skin care products that are certified halal and I believe they are one of the very few to have such certification in the world.

Secret of every Paul Penders product
I was sent two products in the body care range and a couple of makeup products by the distributors of Paul Penders for a complimentary review. To be honest, I started using the body care range without scrutinizing the ingredients because I usually do not give too much attention to ingredients in my body care as compared to my face care products. However, I was curious after using the products for a while and upon checking, noticed that both products contain LevensESSENTIE Gold® – which is said to be the secret to every Paul Penders product.

LevensESSENTIE Gold® unique extract
Apparently, this is a concentrated extract of 22 certified organic herbs, pioneered by Paul’s grandmother some 100 years ago in Holland. Today’s version is a mixture of Eastern and Western herbs from USA, China, Europe and Malaysia. LevensESSENTIE Gold® has been proven to provide a healthy complexion by combating free radical damage. Its extraordinary anti-aging ingredients, such as vitamins A, B, C & E, enzymes and phyto-tocotrienols counteract the early signs of aging and sustain healthy skin.

Luxurious body lotion with lovely scent
That’s a lot of ingredients isn’t it? But you know what? I love this body lotion very much. There’s nothing really special about the texture; it’s thick and creamy but applies well without leaving any greasy residue. I say it feels like some other body lotions I’ve used before and does a good job of relieving skin dryness. I’m been using this for slightly over 3 weeks and I’ve noticed a slight improvement to the skin of my arms as they appear to be smoother. However, it is the uplifting and calming scent of lavender that has got me hooked and so I use this whenever I can, especially before bedtime. This is not an affordable body lotion but I think the ingredients of fine cold-pressed plant oils, natural vitamins, ceramides, and liposomes give some justification to the price point. So this is a luxurious body lotion that has earned my two thumbs up.

Alpha Bisabolol Cell Renewal Serum, 1.5oz US$47.60

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Cocos nucifera (Coconut) extract, Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera) leaf extract, Organic LevensESSENTIE Gold® {Angelica archangelica (Angelica) extract, Arnica montana (Arnica) flower extract, Calendula officinalis (Calendula) flower extract, Matricaria recutita (Chamomile) flower extract, Sambucus nigra (Elderflower) flower extract, Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) root extract, Panax quinquefolium (Ginseng root) extract, Lonicera japonica (Honeysuckle) extract, Humulus lupulus (Hops) extract, Equeisetum hyemale (Horsetail) extract, Juniperus communis (Juniper) fruit extract, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) flower extract, Melissa officinalis (Lemon balm) leaf extract, Urtica dioica (Nettle) extract, Centella asiatica (Penny wort) extract, Mentha piperita (Peppermint) leaf extract, Rosemarinus officinalis (Rosemary) extract, Salvia officinalis (Sage) extract, Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) extract, Curcuma longa (Turmeric) root extract, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) extract, Archillea millefolium (Yarrow) extract}, Polysaccharides (Inulin), Sclerotium gum (Granulated Amigel), Zea May (Sweet corn) kernel extract, Soluble collagen (Bio-marine collagen 6), Ascorbyl isostearate (Vitamin C), Sorbic acid, Xanthan gum, Bisabolol, Ceramide III, Ananas comosus (Bromelain) extract, Carica papaya (Papain) extract.

Clinically proven to reduce & prevent scars and stretch marks
I had absolutely no idea why they sent me this product because it’s not really like I need it, given that my stretch marks are almost 10 years old! The product sounds really promising as it is said to be prepared with antioxidants and enzymes as collagen and elastin boosters plus “cell communicating” agents to balance cell regeneration due to overstretching, as well as being able to remove scar tissue build-up, alter skin structure, and allow vitamins and biomarin collagen to penetrate skin for new cell reproduction. All that sounds good but realistically, I really wasn’t pinning any hope that my stretch marks or old scars would be reduced just by some cream that is described as being clinically proven to reduce and prevent scars or stretch marks. When I checked with the distributor, I was informed that it usually takes at least two weeks to show results based on a consistent use of the serum. And for old scars and stretch marks, it should help reduce the appearance.

Works well on new stretch marks and scars
I have been using this on my lower belly for three weeks now, almost daily and seriously, I have no idea if it’s helping. It seems to have reduced the appearance of stretch marks but they’re still there. And I wasn’t keen to take before and after pictures of my stretch marks to show on this blog. So I decided to engage the help of my son, who recently sustained some wounds on his arm and knees. I only applied the serum on the spots like end of last week and I noticed that the scars, especially the one on his arm, are really healing a lot faster. Okay, young skin do heal a lot quicker but I think this is pretty impressive by my standard. Anyway, I leave you some pictures to gauge; these were taken just a few days apart. I reckon the serum is good for new scars but less so for older scars. I noticed that the product is retailed in a tube and not a tub like what I’ve received but the size is the same. It’s quite expensive if you’re using it to prevent stretch marks and I’m almost down to the last quarter now after just 3 weeks of usage!

Overall summary
I’m quite impressed with these two products sent to me for review because their performance are above average and they don’t irritate my skin, or even my son’s skin. The price of both are considered mid range but given the ingredients and efficacy, I consider them reasonable. Both products have a lifespan of 12 months upon opening even though I did not spot any parabens. Apparently, Paul Penders products use a combination of ingredients to preserve the efficacy of their products made from vitamins A, C & E, sorbic acid, cinnamon and grapefruit extract.

Looks promising, I’d like to try these products if I come across them.
though I’d prefer the body lotion to omit Retinyl palmitate.

I don’t mind it for body products and I use this only at night. I find Retinyl Palmitate really help improve skin texture even though I don’t really like it on my face.

Your son’s scars are looking good! I have very bad wound healing so I may look into this, although you may be right in identifying it to be young skin healing itself. Could you recommend me anything to expedite and improve healing? I have a lot of nasty spotted scars over my legs because I have sensitive skin and ingrown hairs. ?

  4. sesame says:

You might want to try using vitamin E to improve the condition. I recommend you to exfoliate the area frequently, sometimes use lemon mix with salt or sugar as a scrub (lemon has whitening effects) or a lemon + milk polish with a loofah. Then rub in with either a vitamin E cream or oil or anything that is helpful for scars.
