Great Gatsby roars back flapper fashion big time
So it seems that the ‘Great Gatsby’ movie slated for release next year is bringing back the 1920’s Flapper fashion in a big way, going by the 1920s inspired dropped waist dresses and frocks spotted at the Spring / Summer 2012 catwalks in New York, Milan and Paris, complete with layers of sequins and tiers of metal chain fringe.
I love flapper fashion, and so how can I not cover this especially since I’ve already written a post on 1920s flapper inspired fashion accessories? As I was going through the pictures taken from style.com, it was interesting to note how the different designers jazz up the 1920s fashion via different fabrics, materials and colors.
Ralph Lauren Spring / Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection
Ralph Lauren’s representation of the 1920’s flapper styles is feminine, delicate, elegant with silk blouses and flowing floral long skirts or wide leg trousers. Also included in the collection are pale chiffon, crepe and georgette dresses.
Marc Jacobs Spring / Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection
The Marc Jacobs collection included flapper-inspired dresses, complete with interesting textures and materials like see-through cellophane and sequins. The designer described his collection as a ‘potpourri that works’.
Etro Spring / Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection
Here are two sexy yet elegant looking flapper-inspired glittering frocks from the Etro Spring 2012 collection that surely caught my eye. A few of their designs came across rather unique with the art deco.
Versus Spring / Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection
Versus collection is described as “a bit about the cheerleader and a flapper”. I kind of like the pleated sports skirts, which give a subtle but modern take of the flapper fashion.
Gucci Spring / Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection
Finally, Gucci brings back the roaring twenties with star-studded black and gold flapper dresses, crafted in layers of sequins and tiers of metal chain fringe. Definitely works for a modern day glittering kind of love story!

I really like Marc Jacobs’s take on the flapper look. He’s updated it quite nicely.
The fashions are beautiful, but looking at the Marc Jacobs model on the right…eek! is it normal for chest bones to show like that or is she malnourished?
Yes, very modern take. I kind of like Ralph Lauren’s best for the feminine and elegant look.
Think it’s quite a norm for models who are tall and thin…many of them look like that.
My collar bone & chest bones shows up like those models too but alas I am not tall like them.
You’re quite skinny then?
Lovely clothes and I love how the designers have updated given the 20’s a fresh look. Sadly I cannot pull off a drop waist well. I remember having a dress quite similar to the Etro one’s back in the 90’s and it was prettier on the hanger than it was on me!!
I love the style too but don’t look great with drop waist. I wore them a lot when I was younger though.
I really love all the clothes the designers are really great .thanks for sharing..
You’re welcome!
