Omega 3 fish oil to drive away my PMS blues

I know, I know. I seem like a sales promoter for Kordel’s supplements. Well, sales promoter I am not but I’m definitely sold on their supplements because they work for me. So what new supplements have I been taking from their slate? It’s the Kordel’s Hi-Omega 3 Wild Salmon & Fish Oils. I didn’t have success with the plant-based flax oil supplement and so decided to go back to taking fish oil, mainly for my heart, brain and skin. However, one of the first benefits that I’m reaping is that it is helping to ease my PMS tremendously.

General benefits of Omega 3 for women
Omega 3 fatty acids are widely known to be good for us as it reduces inflammation and increases blood flow, which is good for our heart, brain and even mood. It is also said to be able to help women protect against osteoporosis and breast cancer. In addition, it also helps us to maintain supple skin, lustrous hair, and stronger nails. More interestingly, the essential Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil can help to alleviate the symptoms of PMS including inflammation, uterine cramps and pain.

Alleviated my PMS blues
Prior to this, I was taking the Omega fish oil from Nordic Naturals but I hadn’t really noticed that much of a difference, aside from an improvement in my hair texture. However, after taking the Kordel’s Hi-Omega 3 Fish Oil, I forgot all about menstruation until the day it arrived. I didn’t think about killing this blog, which is a thought that occurs whenever my PMS strikes. I had very slight backache. I hardly scolded my son although I was still nagging at my husband. In short, the PMS bitch sort of left me alone.

Omega 3 as opposed to evening primrose oil for PMS
I could have just taken a supplement of evening primrose oil but have been staying away from that since discovering that long term usage of evening primrose oil could cause hormonal imbalance. Anyway, I think the Omega 3 supplement is a better choice since it provides a host of other health and skin benefits.

Choose a quality Omega 3 fish oil supplement
If you’re considering a fish oil supplement, do ensure that you buy only pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled products as most fish in the world is contaminated with mercury, PCB’s, and other toxins. I’m quite happy with the Kordel’s Hi-Omega 3 because it is stated to have undergone stringent testing for freshness and the presence of environmental contaminants including mercury, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), DDT (an organic pesticide) and dioxins.

Sounds good. EPO never worked for me despite years of taking them.
I recently started taking Borage Oil supplements (for the past 4 – 5 months). They apparently contain more GLA than EPO. I used to get really bad PMS and very bad cramps (lasting 2 – 3 days) that had me bending over most of the time. Like I said, EPO never, ever worked. But the Borage started taking effect about 4 months into the routine. I don’t get that much water retention, backache was slight as well and more importantly, no cramps and “unnecessary MC”! Quite amazing.

  2. sesame says:

I’m glad you found the Borage Oil to work for you. The Kordel’s EPO supplement actually did work for me but I was worried about the risk in the long term. This Omega 3 worked very fast – I saw effects in a month. It is also helping with my mild heart problem. I’m just hoping it’ll improve my skin condition, especially getting rid of my rashes soon.

  3. Jyoan says:

LOL, “killing this blog”. Yes, Omega 3 & 6 is definitely good. =)

My mum fed me Scott’s Liver Oil for 10 over years then stop. But now, I am drinking Nestle Milk Powder with Omega 3 & 6 and Acticol.

I also cook my eggs for breakfast using Olive Oil, and eat a tablespoon of almonds as snack.

I love Japanese food and salmon, so naturally, I do eat Salmon once or twice a week as well.

Whether it helps PMS, I am not sure, as I do not develop mood swings. But Omega 3/6 is very good at helping people feel full and satisfying, food-wise…

And yes, I do believe it will help the heart and everything else they say… So I make it a point to eat it. =)

I alternate between fish oil and flax seed oil. On top of that, I exercise a lot (yoga & treadmill), which helps. My biggest issue during PMS is that I will have sleeping problem, which can be most irritating. This is something which I haven’t really been able to solve. Still not sure if yoga actually helps..

  5. stella says:

that’s funny lol… talking about alleviating pms, i started taking the tcm product ‘bai feng wan’ in the last month and it seems to have worked; the usual body aches and bad tummy cramps i have before and on the first day of my menses have significantly reduced; i didn’t feel my period so much until it began too. i also started exercising moderately again in the last month so it could’ve helped too. after a few years of taking painkillers in increasing dosages and having to ‘upgrade’ to stronger painkillers in the last year, i’m hoping for a natural solution to my PMS. i think i’ve found it

  6. fwy says:

I had not been taking supplements for years. How about cod liver oil? Do they have the same effect?

  7. sesame says:

I’m sure they help. I haven’t been eating cod liver oil for a long time but I love Scotts especially like to bite into the softgel. Get satisfaction from the fishy taste. ?

  8. sesame says:

I guess you might have to persist longer with yoga to see the benefits but if it doesn’t help with sleeping, it’ll still help with other aspects.

  9. sesame says:

Oh Bai Fen Wan was something I took for at least 20 years? My mom used to make me swallow it since primary 6 and gosh, then it was one big black lump that was horrible to the taste. But it helped. My PMS really came on when I stopped taking that. I was also thinking of reverting to it cos I bought one bottle of it but haven’t got down to eating it.

  10. sesame says:

From what I’ve read, it seems cod liver oil has vitamin D and A on top of Omega 3. So it seems like it’s even better. Need to find out more to ascertain.

  11. stella says:

yea my mom tried to make me take it too but it was so horrible i couldn’t take it after a few times. worse that she made it into a soup i guess; the pills are really stinky (in a herbally way) too, but at least you can swallow them fast!

  12. Penny says:

Thanks for the info. Been looking for some supplements as I’m pretty clueless about what to take and don’t trust too much of the promoters’ words…I’m going to look for this and give it a try ?

  13. Mint says:

Oh. I tried to take EPO for 2 months or so last year. But i realized it made my oily skin even more oily and caused breakouts so i stopped. My cousin had the same problem with EPO too. Wonder if fish oil will be the same.. =(

  14. sesame says:

A soup??? How to drink that? But the ones manufactured these days are small black pills so very easy to swallow. The old one was one big lump where you have to bite into it. So you can imagine.

  15. sesame says:

It’s also best to research too to find out what works for you.

  16. sesame says:

I had some readers indicate that they broke out a bit with EPO. EPO has estrogenic properties and the breakout is probably estrogen related acne.

Fish oil should not cause this problem but I can’t guarantee as everyone reacts differently. For example, many said flax seed oil worked well for them but it broke me up.

  17. Su says:

I swear by Kordel’s Fish Oil too. Am kiasu and believe in trusted brands for supplements.
I think it makes the skin less dry and hair becomes shinier.

  18. deb says:

I would love to try fish oil but get serious chest pain every time i try to take it. I’m 24 and i feel like i’m about to have a heart attack when I take fish oil! It scares me because I used to be overweight and I sometimes think it’s some issue with plaque buildup in my arteries. I eat really healthy, exercise and I am at a healthy weight now but there’s still that fear. I take flaxseed and other oils without problems though but they don’t really help my PMS or my cramps.

  19. sesame says:

You’re also a fan of Kordel’s Fish Oil? Yay! How long were you taking before you noticed the effects on your skin and hair?

  20. sesame says:

Oh dear…I’m sorry to learn that fish oil doesn’t work for you. In that case, it’s best you do not take it cos it’s not supposed to give you that sort of effects. Flaxseed oil is rich in Omega but it seems to work slightly differently.

  21. Sylwia says:

I tried taking fish oil two times and my face broke out so badly, I had really painful cysts.

  22. sesame says:

Oh it’s not working for you too? I couldn’t do with flaxseed oil. That broke me up. Looks like these oils don’t work across the board.

  23. Su says:

Been taking it for 4 years. After 2 weeks I felt a difference. These days taking salmon or other cold fish sashimi/sushi you dun know what are the contaminants found them because some of these fish are farmed. At least I am assured when it comes to Kordel’s that the contaminants are filtered.
Kordel’s EPO dun work for me, i get breakouts.

  24. Crystal says:

Good idea… because I just choose a generic brand. It helps with my acne flareouts

  25. sesame says:

I felt a difference too in a short time. Yes, agree about the contaminants and it’s not always good to eat fish often these days.

If you were getting breakouts from the EPO, it could be estrogen related.

  26. sesame says:

Whatever brand you use, just make sure they filter out the impurities.

  27. Liesl says:

I recently started on bai feng wan too and am amazed by the results. I always had pms but since started on this the past three months. The cramps are gone and since the bloatedness and cramps are gone, my moods improved much too. I hated pills of any sort coz I have difficulty swallowing it so what I do now is to mix the pills in warm water til it all softens and just drink the mixture down. I read the directions for taking this on the box and yes it says that we can add this to make soup too as like in tonic.

  28. sesame says:

Drinking? I kind of remember the taste and I think I’ll do better with swallowing. But glad it’s working for you. It’s quite good stuff for long term usage.

  29. kaye says:

My daddy is also taking that ?

  30. Luciana says:

Sometimes I get heartburn when I take Fish oil (and also when I eat tuna, but not when I eat sashimi, which is odd). Maybe the person who commented above with the chest pain actually gets heartburn? But I don’t know…

I never knew it was good for PMS though, so I need to start taking it again and give it a try. I need all the help I can get during that time of the month. lol

  31. sesame says:

Hi Luciana: Oh, you get heartburn? So I’m not sure if this is suitable for you. But yes, it’s rather good for PMS.

  32. Faith says:

Hi Sesame: Read through your post and I’m interested to take fish oil as well. May I know are you taking fish oil on a long term basis? I understand that you’re taking various supplements too. Do you usually take them at different time to prevent them binding with each other?

  33. sesame says:

Hi Faith: I’ve stopped taking Fish Oil since I started on Fit Solution. The only supplement I still take is probiotics. In the past, when I took various supplements, I’ll just take them all at once. The only thing I took note of was to avoid drinking tea an hour before or after taking the supplements.

  34. Debra Lang says:

Could someone tell me how many of the 1 to 6 suggested dose of fish oil I should be taking? Please email if you can. thank you!

  35. sesame says:

Maybe you can start with 2 then 3 gradually?

  36. natasha says:

i have just stopped taking flaxseed oil hoping my skin will get better as i have bad acne ever since i staretd it – however it was fab for my water retention ibs and hair grew so fast and long – do you think i would suit fish oil or would this also break me out?
    thankyou

  37. Sesame says:

I can’t say for sure but chances of it breaking you out is probably lesser than flaxseed oil.
